Traffic Management
South Florida is among one of the most congested areas in the nation, and according to the Texas Transportation Institute's Urban Mobility Study, Miami ranks in the number four spot. The unique combination of a strong tourism industry that generates an influx of out-of-town-visitors, coupled with a steady increase in local population, presents our roadways with a high rate of traveler demand on a daily basis.
To effectively meet these demands and provide a transportation system that is safe and reliable to residents and visitors alike, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six operates an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program that provides real-time solutions to the problem of traffic congestion.
The program is comprised of a series of innovative transportation strategies that together work to improve traffic conditions and optimize the capacity of the existing roadway systems.
Traffic management is a proven approach that reduces congestion and provides real-time benefits. Implementing programs that utilize advanced technologies to manage travel conditions reduces the need to build additional roads or widen existing ones, making the traffic management program a viable alternative to traditional highway construction projects. It is a cost-effective and innovative way to increase safety conditions, improve mobility and meet traveler demand for the motoring public.
