Intelligent Transportation Systems
The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program is a transportation initiative that uses advanced electronic technologies to manage our transportation infrastructure more efficiently, and provide motorists with safer, more reliable roadways. These technologies are integrated together to provide the framework for a dynamic traffic management system that operates according to real-time traffic conditions, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Building wider roadways is often not possible due to right-of-way limitations and budgetary constraints. The ITS Program is proving to be a viable alternative to traditional capacity improvement types of projects. Through the application of innovative traffic management practices, the program is maximizing the efficiency and safety of our existing roadway systems. ITS technologies allow transportation managers to gather real-time information and implement adequate operational strategies to improve the conditions of our roadways. Services provided by the ITS Program include traffic management, incident management and traveler information.
FDOT District Six first implemented ITS solutions in the late 1990s and has since expanded it to improve travel conditions along the limited and controlled access facilities of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Currently, District Six has instrumented approximately 213.5 center line miles of roadways with ITS devices. These roadways include Interstates 75, 95, 195, 395, State Road 826/Palmetto Expressway, State Road 5/ US-1, State Road 9, Florida's Turnpike Spur and Card Sound Road.
