ITS Supports Port of Miami Tunnel Project
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six Office recently broke ground on the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) Project, and the District Six Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program will be supporting the project with traffic management services.
The project is one of the largest and most important transportation initiatives in Florida’s history. It is designed to improve traffic access going to and from the Port of Miami, with the tunnel serving as a dedicated, underwater roadway connecting the Port with the MacArthur Causeway and Interstate 395 (I-395). With construction efforts scheduled to continue through 2014, the traffic management services provided by the ITS Office will help to ensure motorists remain safe and informed of all project-related activities.
The ITS Office will provide incident management resources as well as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, dynamic message signs (DMS) and microwave vehicle detectors (MVDS) that will allow the SunGuide® Transportation Management Center (TMC) to monitor traffic conditions and deliver traveler information to motorists through the 511 Traveler Information Service and DMS.
The ITS Office is proud to play an important role in the POMT project, which will be beneficial to South Florida as it continues its economic growth. For more details on the ITS Program’s role in the POMT project, please read this article published in Florida’s Statewide ITS Newsletter, The SunGuide Disseminator.
