All Ramp Signals Are Now Active Along I-95!
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six Office has activated 14 ramp signals along the entrance points of Interstate 95 (I-95) to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Phase 1B of the Ramp Signaling Program is part of the 95 Express Project, which is an overall congestion management plan that is providing motorists with more travel options and better driving conditions on I-95. Ramp signals are traffic control devices designed to break up the groups of merging vehicles entering from the ramps that cause congestion at the highway entrance points. The signals change from red to green lights to ensure the number of cars entering the highway is not more than the gaps available for them. The signals operate based on real-time traffic conditions and will turn on during hours of heavy expressway use, such as weekday rush-hour periods. Southbound ramp signals are typically activated from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and northbound ramp signals are activated from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. The signals also may be activated in the case a traffic incident or special event impacts regular highway conditions. Advanced warning signs will flash to alert drivers when ramp signals are turned on.
Phase 1B Ramp Signals have been activated along:
- Fourteen (14) Ramp Signals in total:
- NE 183 Street/Miami Gardens Drive (northbound)
- NE 203 Street/Ives Dairy Road (southbound)
- NW 151 Street (southbound)
- NW 125 Street (southbound)
- NW 103 Street (southbound)
- US 441 (southbound)
- NW 79 Street (southbound)
- NE 203 Street/Ives Dairy Road (northbound)
- NE 183 Street/Miami Gardens Drive (southbound)
- NW 135 Street (southbound)
- NW 119 Street (southbound)
- NW 95 Street (southbound)
- NW 167 Street (southbound)
- NW 62 Street (southbound)
Phase 1A of the project has been active since February 2009, and it has shown to have increased average travel speeds by 16% and improved the overall trip time reliability for northbound motorists on I-95. With a total of 22 ramp signals now active along both directions of the highway, drivers will now be able to fully experience the benefits of the Ramp Signaling Program in south Florida.
Drivers who fail to obey the ramp signals will be subject to penalties as permitted by law. To learn more about the ramp signals and how they work, please visit www.95Express.com and click on the Ramp Signaling tab, or call 1-877-95X-FDOT (1-877-959-3368).
