FDOT District Six Improves its Road Ranger Program!
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six Office has enhanced its Road Ranger Service Patrol Program to provide better, more efficient incident management services to the motorists of Miami-Dade County.
District Six recently revised the program’s scope of services in an effort to reduce the congestion caused by travel-lane blocking events and improve the safety conditions of our roadways. To achieve this, the District requested their contract service provider add flatbed tow-trucks to their traditional vehicle fleet for faster incident clearance times. The contractor (at no extra cost to the Department) also added a service patrol vehicle support unit (van) to replenish fleet vehicles with on-board consumables while on patrol. As a result, the district now counts on four-vehicle types that are each designed to perform a specific duty. The new fleet is made up of 22 vehicles, (7) flatbed tow trucks, (5) regular tow trucks and (10) pick-up trucks.
The new contract also requires all Road Ranger Service Patrol operators to pass a FDOT-administered written and practical exam to become eligible to work under the contract. The tests evaluate operators knowledge on the Program’s Standard Operating Guidelines and everyday service patrol activities, such as Maintenance of Traffic set-up and customer service.
The District Six Road Ranger Service Patrol Program provide services along Interstates 75, 95, 195, 395 and State Road 826. Eight (8) Road Rangers are on patrol during regular weekday operating hours, and seven (7) Road Rangers are on patrol during the weekend and overnight hours.
