SUNGUIDE, Florida's Intelligent Transportation System

Welcome to SunGuide

image Traffic congestion affects the quality of life for our residents, visitors and businesses alike. With local population continuing to grow, the need for a sound transportation management system is essential to achieve the levels of mobility necessary to ensure regional growth and prosperity. Construction of new highway capacity has not kept pace with the growing demand of the traveling public. The implementation of ITS has proven to be a valuable and cost-effective alternative to traditional highway expansion projects. ITS is the application of advanced communications technologies, Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS), that assist in managing our transportation systems to enhance the efficiency and safety of our roadways. District Six, in its ongoing mission to maintain the mobility goals set within our region, continues its commitment to implement and operate the ITS program along the roadways within Southeast Florida.

ITS Program Mission: Enhance the safety, security, and efficiency of Florida’s transportation system through the implementation of interoperable ITS technology in support of local, regional, and statewide mobility.

FDOT District Six’s SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) serves as the regional command post that monitors and controls these technologies to provide motorists with reliable traveler information and coordination with incident responders within the roadways of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The 32,000 square foot facility features a multi-screen video wall with eight workstations that houses the FDOT operations staffs who monitor traffic, disseminate information and provide our district with incident management services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. One of the main roles of the TMC operations staff is to work closely with emergency responders and various transportation agencies to administer procedures that allow for the quick and safe clearance of traffic incidents that affect our highways. Coordination with these agencies is enhanced by the collocation of the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Troop “E” within the TMC to provide our region with a seamless approach to incident management. From large-scale crashes, to roadside debris, operators manage these traffic-related incidents and dispatch the appropriate resources to reduce the impacts these events have along our highways, such as Road Ranger Service Patrols. Additionally, the TMC also serves to broadcast important traffic information via its public dissemination tools, such as the DMS boards, Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) Signal and the new 511 Traveler Information System to provide motorists with up-to-the-minute traffic reports. The SunGuide TMC manages and operates these services in support of the ITS Program Mission, which is to optimize capacity and provide motorists with safe and efficient travel conditions along our regional highways systems.
